environmental laws at the same time have been a problem for poultry owners. These problems have been solved. The solution is the application of a technology that was developed by a Filipino scientist inventor. This technology is simple, easy to learn and relatively cheap. The concept is the application of a microbial digester on the chicken manure. This digester ferments the manure. During fermentation, the digester:
(1) breaks down the cementing agents in the manure,
(2) prevents the emission of foul odor,
(3) destroys harmful microbes,
(4) conserves nutrients for plants,
(5) keeps the manure dry,

Carageenan is the name given to the family of food grade materials obtained from red seaweeds. Carageenans are sulfate polysaccharides and are chemically similar. They differ in number and position of ester sulfate groups.
The carageenan family has three broad types product:
Kappa — strong gelling
Iota- weak geling
Lambda- non-gelling
Although there are other types, only kappa, iota and lambda are of commercial significance. They possess the properties applicable in food, pharmaceuticals, etc. However each has different processing and extraction methods from each other.

This family contains about 35%, 3,6 —A6 and 25% sulfate, and being more hydrophobic, the free-thaw and gel-fresh processes used in Gracilaria agar production are quite applicable to Kappa-carageenan extracted from Eucheuma contonii (=Kappaphycus alvarezil)
B. Iota — Carageenan
This family of carageenophytes contains 30%, 3, 6— A6 and 32% sulfate and thus, more hydrochielec than kappa-carageenan. Iota carageenan has gelling properties in the presence of calcium ions. In the early ‘8os, Rustico Limpin was the
youngest among the group of fishpond operators in Mexico, Pampanga. His peers called him “Tiks” but since he was fond of taking orders and serving coffee during meetings, older colleagues started calling him Boy, nickname which he has learned to love because of its endearing reference to youth and innocence.
At that time, Mang Boy was already into aquaculture, raising sugpo and learning the intricacies of fish breeding. “Our fishponds were located in the downstream side of Mexico, Pampanga overlooking Manila Bay,” Mang Boy fondly recalls. However, the historic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 destroyed the ecology of the area including hectares of fishponds which eventually overflowed with lahar. Left with no choice but to transfer their operations in the highlands, Mang Boy thought of raising tilapia, a cultured freshwater fish that originally came from Africa and introduced to the Philippines in the early ‘50s. This serendipitous moment paved the way for better opportunities not just for Mang Boy, but to hundreds of fishpond operators who also shifted to tilapia raising.
